The color of chocolate and champagne diamonds (also called brown or low color diamonds) is judged on the Argyle Scale, which is named after the Argyle Mine in western Australia which developed the scale and mines the majority of the world's low color diamonds. The Argyle Scale rates brown color diamond quality on a scale of C1-C7:

C1-C2: Light champagne

C3-C4: Medium champagne

C5-C6: Dark champagne

C7 : Cognac

The Argyle Scale is accepted as the industry standard for rating the color of brown and low color diamonds. The remaining '3 Cs' of diamond quality (carat, clarity and cut) also apply to low color diamonds when judging diamond quality.
