Opal Heart Rings

Welcome to our Opal Heart Ring page. Opals rate a 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale of gemstone hardness, making it a rather delicate gemstone. If you opt for a natural (non-lab created) opal, be sure to treat it with appropriate care. Natural opals have a high water content and can dry out and crack in dry climates unless they're stored in a sufficiently moist environment. Natural opals are also subject to shattering if subjected to drastic and sudden temperature changes.

Vivid, deep color over a wide spectrum with no 'dead spots' denotes quality opal.

Lab Created Opals. Lab-created opals tend to have a more structured, more orderly appearance to their iridescence. Lab-created opals also do not have a water content like natural opals do and they are also much harder than natural opals, perhaps making a high quality, lab-created opal ring a better choice than a natural opal ring. Intentionally or not, a ring tends to take quite a beating compared to other jewelry such as necklaces and earrings. A gem quality, lab-created opal ring stands a better chance of coming out unscathed versus a natural opal ring. As with natural opals, lab-created opals should be scrutinized for their depth, fire and play of color.

Lab-created opals/synthetic opals are different than other lab-created and synthetic gemstones. While lab-created diamonds, sapphires and rubies have the same chemical composition and physical properties as their natural counterparts (they are, in fact, real gemstones - just not natural gemstones), lab-created gem quality opals have similar properties as that of natural opals.
